English! Even though Alex and his younger brother Nicholas study in a bi-lingual school, most of their friends want to speak Thai when outside of the classroom. So when we're at home, we live in Farangland and speak English!
Get yourself a good Thai dictionary, a set of Thai language DVD's, head into a local Thai area around your neighborhood, and speak the language whenever you can. Practice every day. Better yet, if you can swing it, fly to Thailand and practice with the locals. If you want an easy way to stay in Thailand for a few months, get your TEFL and teach English. Don't let fear hold you back!
One more thing - if you do not speak Thai or can barely speak the Thai language, how can you truly know about Thailand and Thai culture? You can't.
What's my point? If someone professes to be an expert capable of teaching you the ins and outs of living in Thailand but they can't speak the language, or can barely speak it, find another teacher. Honestly, I've been here 17 years and still feel like a newbie sometimes.
