A long time viewer writes in with yet another question, one of many he has submitted and I am not amused. Many times money is the root cause of problems while living in Thailand. In this case, it is immaturity.

I finally go around to paying a visit to the King Power Mahanakhon Sky Walk. At 314 meters high, it was the tallest building in Thailand until November 2018 when the 315 meter tall Magnolia Waterfront Residences Tower opened. To be honest, going up in tall buildings is one of my least favorite things to do. After falling from the fourth floor in the midst of a fire and nearly dying, one might be inclined to think the highest I would go is the second story of my townhouse. Physically, my body still occasionally feels pain from the fall. Mentally, going up high is no scarier for me than anyone else. I don't freak out anytime I'm up fifty feet or higher, but I prefer to be on the ground. After all, are human beings really meant to be walking around in a structure a thousand feet into the air? I think not.
Take the glass floor of the Mahanakhon Sky Walk. From a distance, it looks safe. It is safe. So you throw on some non-slip shoe covers, walk out onto the glass, and laugh. No big deal. Then you look down and feel like you're falling. You mind plays a trick on you. It feels like you're falling, or going to fall. Every person I spoke with who went out on the glass told me they had the same reaction. The instinctual human reaction is a split second, "I'm going to fall," or "I'm dizzy." Only after a few seconds does the mind and body come together to realize you are still standing on something solid and not plummeting to your death. Several people I spoke with have told me there's no way they would walk out onto the glass. Could you fall through the glass and die? Of course, anything could happen, but it is highly unlikely. If you visit the Mahanakhon Sky Walk, you owe it to walk on the glass. It's mind over matter. Face your fears. A young, depressed American expat looking for a better life believes Thailand is the answer to his prayers. Is he right? As Socrates once said, “How can you wonder your travels do you no good, when you carry yourself around with you?” |
