Anyway, he managed to get new teeth and in his words, ‘They’re beautiful!” Women are coming around again. When I asked if and when he was going to get a girlfriend, his response surprised me. Sort of.
“Never,” he said. “I don’t want a girlfriend or a wife. They’re too much of a hassle.”
“Huh? Why not? What about your physical needs?"
“That’s not a problem. I can always go to the Bunny Ranch,” he said, laughing. “But if I get involved with the wrong chick, it could cost me big time.”
Now my pal isn’t rich, he doesn’t have a whole lot in way of material goods, but he does have a trailer that’s paid for, a decent job, and for the most part, he has his happiness. Especially now that he has teeth again. He lives in Reno, he loves the town and he has a fantastic view from his front doorstep. So his life could be much worse.
By most people’s account he’s a gentleman and is a decent human being. Many years ago when I lost my job at a print shop, I was down and out. Rent was coming up and I didn't have the money to pay it. Nor did I have money to eat. His family welcomed me into their home, helped me find a job, and three months later, when I was back on my feet I moved out. A stellar dude. That used to be enough. Nowadays, I’m not so sure.
“Last girlfriend I had almost cost me my job and almost got me thrown out of my trailer park!" he said. "Women nowadays aren’t the same as they used to be.”
I hear this all the time, but to hear it from former wing man drove the issue home.
“Are they that bad dude?”
“All it takes it getting involved with a chick who turns out to be pyscho and I’m ruined,” he said, trying to explain his reasoning. “My trailer is in a nice park with nice neighbors and it’s clean and quiet. If some chick comes over and starts screaming and yelling, I’m out on my ass.”
I keep hearing how bad American women are. While I had my ups and downs with them, they weren’t that bad. Maybe they are now, or maybe the dynamic between men and women has changed drastically. Perhaps men are tired of getting the short end of the stick and have had enough. What I know is this: a helluva lot of men have written me complaining about western women and very few have ever taken the time to stick up for them.
Between the negative vibe in the US and the way men say women have become, I can understand why so many men want to get out of Dodge. The grass is always greener on the other side. If by chance it’s not, there are other pastures out there. It's always worth a shot, woman or not. After all, we only live once!
