Bangkok, August 15, 2017 — Day one. This is the first of 365 blogs. Starting today, I will be posting every single day. I am not sure why I want to do this, perhaps because writing every day requires discipline. The idea is to stick to matters related to Thailand and other countries in Southeast Asia and to give an idea of what living in Thailand involves. Back to the life and times of an American in Bangkok. Back to writing and photography and producing videos that hopefully help people. Most importantly, back to acting like I have an editor and looking for magazines who are willing to publish my words and images.
Today's podcast has to do with the rising cost of living in Thailand. Most long term expats agree the golden years of Thailand are over. Thailand is changing and has been for at least a decade of so. The cost of living is rising and Thailand is no longer cheap. Cheaper, yes, but no longer cheap. Rent is cheap (or at least it can be), labor is cheap and street food is still inexpensive (although costs have doubled in the past 20 years). Try buying a new car in Thailand though. Or a high end camera. Go to the grocery and buy cherries, avocados, peanut butter, tea or a box of Cheerios. Living like a Thai is not always what it is cracked up to be — unless you're living like a Thai who has money. Live like a poor rice farmer and you will quickly find out Thailand is not cheap.

Thailand is no longer cheap. Cheaper, but not cheap. You get what you pay for and getting back in the grove.

Things are not a cheap when I first went to Bangkok.... Oh that was 1969.... (-_-) I agree soon the attraction to Thailand will change.... Soon people will be coming for the beauty rather than the girls, booze and parties.

It's okay if Thailand is a fun place to party, like with many other countries, but I think if it leaned more towards and Amsterdam-type prostitution scene it would be more like the Thais want. However, the nightlife in Bangkok vs Amsterdam are quite a bit different and visitors to Thailand might not like this. Sometimes you have to break a few eggs to make an omelet.
