Yesterday, I went to Fortune on Ratchada Road. There were two camera shops there that sold film cameras and I wanted to see what they had in stock. I walked around, checked the price on the SanDisk 64GB SDHC Extreme Pro memory card and tried to get an external hard drive repaired. The hard drive was shot. Anyhow, Fortune is undergoing construction and updating its look. I was surprised to find out both camera shops were gone. Where they moved, nobody seemed to know, which was disappointing.
I wanted to go to IQ Lab off Soi Ekkamai so I jumped on the subway and transferred over to the skytrain. After disembarking, I walked down to the street and headed towards the lab. On the corner of Soi Ekkamai and Sukhumvit is a relatively new coffee shop and restaurant, The Coffee Club. At first I just thought it was a place to grab a coffee. It was about 2PM and I was in need of an espresso. I placed my order, choosing to overlook the cakes in the display case in front of me. When I sat down, the waitress gave me a menu and once again, I chose to pass. I just wanted to down my espresso and bail.
The waitress walked over and brought the group next to me their food. One lady had ordered the mud cake, the very cake I was drooling over. Out of the corner of my eye I saw her put the first piece of cake into her mouth and her eyes rolled back, she licked her lips and said, "aroi maak," or "very delicious." It was too much for me to take. I called the waitress over and ordered the mud cake. The place was quite busy and she was noticeably frazzled. She brought me a username and password for the WIFI. "No...mud cake," I said. She apologized and moments later, I had the cake pictured above in front of me. It looked so good I had to take a photograph. My first thought was, "Nicholas loves chocolate. I have to bring him here, he'll go nuts over this."
This was no ordinary cake. It was special. It was to die for. It's a chocolate lover's dream. Truly. Most Thai cakes fall short of the mark, using less sugar than necessary, and winding up less rich and creamy than an extraordinary cake like this.
How do I know the cake was truly outstanding? There was no guilt afterwards!
