where going up and down stairs is painful. I rarely wear socks and the biggest reason is it is painful to lift my right leg up. Lately, it's gotten worse.
So when the pain and numbness got irritating to the point where I wanted to slam my head against the wall, I went to the hospital. After giving me the once over and doing some mobility tests, the doctor sent me to radiology to have my leg x-ray'd. As you can see below, the space between the pelvis and ball joint is almost non-existent. At the bottom of the ball there is a bone spur-type issue going on. Big difference between the right and left hip.
The doctor gave me two option: have hip replacement surgery or start physical therapy and lose some weight. This may help but at some point, I will need the surgery. If I do the procedure at Vejthani Hospital, the cost is approximately 550,000 baht ($17,500). Hopefully, my insurance will cover a large percentage of this but I need to look into this.
For now, I'll continue to modify my diet, try to lose more weight, exercise when physically possible, and I'll start physical therapy later today. To be honest, I am irritated by the pain more than anything else. It can also be frustrating at times. As my mother told me, "Just do what you need to do. It's no big deal." She always says this no matter the situation but she is right. I'm off to my physical therapy appointment in four hours.
I joke about being old but I am not old. Older and more experienced than in the past, yes, but seventy-five or eighty is old, fifty-one is not. The body might be breaking down but on the inside,
I'm still a young man.
I am still planning on going on my trip down the Mekong, even if it means buying a cane. I leave in about ten days. Once I come back, I'll put together a trailer for Kickstarter or Indiegogo and then try to raise the funds to do the trip the right way. What is the right way? It means having the right equipment; a Steadicam, one other person with me to be the cameraman, a second GoPro video camera, a lot more batteries, and having enough cash to be able to pay a professional editor to piece together a good video.
Thank you to the three people who sent a little money for Bang. I am going to try and get him his ID card and also try to get him seen regularly by a doctor. I'll check in with Bang in the next week and will be sure to put up a video and let everyone know what's happening with him.
