Hello Scott,
I recently found your site. I'm an American, long time resident of Tokyo and frequent visitor to the Kingdom.

Your reasons for not going back really resonate with me. The US has become a completly differnt country than the one I grew up in. I don't like what it's become. Though having said that I wonder how much of the change is in me and I just see the country differently because I've been away so long.

When I left, the media wasn't as prevalent as it is now. Perhaps my perception is different, but then again, if my perception is different, maybe many others are different as well. Maybe this means what we think is the truth? I definitely think things are different nowadays.

Yeah, I agree totally, Scott. My eyes began to open up to the 'real world' during my 4 years in S.Vietnam (68-72). During that time I had a chance to do a fair bit of traveling over SE Asia although I didn't get back overseas til 2007 when I got an English teaching gig in S.Korea.

During that time I began to see how 'plastic', weak and woefully uninformed much of the American public was. Of course, it's gotten progressively worse every year.

People here in the Philippines (which I think really sucks) people as me when I'm going back to the US and I also (like you) say, "Never". I think an older, single guy like me(69) who still has to work and with no particular technical skills.... he's got a LOT better chance of a decent lifestyle in most SE Asian countries and lots of Latin American countries.

The US is so full of 'Brown Shirts' nowadays it's really shameful but those frogs over there have been in the boiling water for so long that they think it's normal.

I still think there's going to be a tidal wave of people wanting to get out in the very near future. The only problem is that at some point, the Obama Gestapo and Brown Shirts aren't going to let people get out.

Regards,
Art

@Art
Unfortunately getting out isn't good enough anymore. With the introduction of the new FACTA rules due to go into effect in June 2014 the US govt is twisting the arms of foreign goverments and financial institutions to turn over financial records of American citizens living overseas.

We're being treated like cattle. To really break your ties with the US now, you need to give up US citizenship. I've read a few articles on the internet saying that since last year this has been happening at a record pace. Here's one example. http://online.wsj.com/news/articles/SB10001424127887323977304579002780562003814

I hope to join the ranks of ex-Americans within the next year.

I don't like the US imposing their will upon foreign country to gather data on their own citizens but this in itself would not make me renounce my citizenship. The only thing that would piss me off enough to make me even consider doing so would be if they were to make a law whereby no American can stay overseas for longer than 3 months or something like this.
