There is a saying among expats here in Thailand; if you don’t like it here, go home. If you’re a foreigner in Thailand and are hell bent on complaining, don’t expect other expats and especially Thais, to care.
If you don’t like it, there are certainly other fabulous places to live. Go find somewhere more to your liking and don’t let the door hit you on the way out. The less expats living here complaining, the better. More of Thailand for those who appreciate it, even with all its irrationalities and irregularities. Sort of like a good looking woman with a pimple on her butt and nasty feet.
Don’t like immigration’s unpredictable stipulations? Or banking inconsistencies? Go home! Dislike being called “farang or occasionally being charged more than Thai citizens?” Go home. Feel like you’re a second class citizen? Go home. The easy answer is to leave — farang go home! Doing so means you may be giving up on your dream, or on broadening your horizons, but it also means escaping all that you dislike about the country.
Make your choice, take your pick, but one way or another, stop complaining. If you liked everything about your own country, then why did you move to Thailand in the first place?
Foreigners can debate an issue until they’re blue in the face, but to do so expecting serious change is a fool’s game, like choosing the sexiest dancer in a bar and expecting her to profess her undying love the moment you pay her bar fine. And expecting those words to ring true.
This is Thailand, T.I.T. and this is how THEY operate here. Their way was their way long before any of us were born and I doubt our way will ever fully become THEIR way. Why should it?
No matter the destination, there are always positives and negatives. Some people will never be happy no matter where they live. Many years ago I stated Thailand is no utopia. Nothing has changed. Thailand is still a great place to live with far more positives than negatives, but it’s not a utopian society.
Learn some basic Thai (at least), learn and accept the culture as it is, mind your own business, don’t go looking for trouble with anyone, discard the us versus them mentality and chances are you’ll have a pretty good life here. Don’t do anything stupid and you’ll increase your chance of success.
Toto, you’re not in Kansas anymore, you’re in Thailand.
