In fact, a whopping 92% of the country's wealthiest households were interested in purchasing real estate abroad last year, according to the Coldwell Banker Global Luxury Report. Overall, the reasons behind the wealthy's desire to purchase property abroad are varied, but the opportunity for a better quality of life, the need to future-proof their wealth, and a desire to escape the political and cultural climate in the US are among the most common.

Over 100,000 people have emigrated from Hong Kong since the National Security Law was passed in 2020. The Hong Kong Census and Statistics Department reported that the net outflow of Hong Kong residents reached 60,000 in 2022. Peter Tse, director of the International Immigration and Property Expo (II&PE), believes that the number of emigrants will continue to rise, citing an increase in the number of seminars on immigration and overseas homeownership held in the past six months compared to the previous exhibition.

The top three destinations for Hong Kong emigrants are the UK, Canada, and Australia, reflecting the attractive immigration policies these countries have for Hong Kong people. The II&PE conducted an online survey among registered visitors, showing that 63% of respondents plan to immigrate within one to two years.

When asked about their top concerns when emigrating, more than half of the respondents chose “personal employment” (52%), followed by “children’s education” (14%). The UK BNO visa scheme for Hong Kong residents, launched in January 2021, has seen a drop in applications, with 15,600 submitted in the fourth quarter of 2022.

Scholar Chung Kim-wah predicts that the wave of emigration will continue for at least three to four years, although it is not as sharp as the previous two years.

The Thai government has high hopes for its Long Term Residence visa program, which is expected to attract one million foreigners over the next five years, aiding post-pandemic tourism and economic growth. According to Narit Therdsteerasukdi, secretary general of Thailand's Board of Investment, 2,800 foreigners have applied for the visas since its launch on September 1, 2020, with retirees accounting for 35% of applications, as reported by Thai media.

To be eligible for the visa program, foreigners must meet certain requirements, such as holding at least $1 million in assets, having a validated annual personal income of a minimum of $80,000 for the past two years, and making an investment of at least $500,000 in Thai government bonds, foreign direct investment, or Thai property. Retirees aged 50 years and older with an annual pension or stable income of at least $80,000 per year at the time of application are also eligible.

Thanks to its open visa policy, Thailand welcomed 11 million foreign visitors last year, with its tourism industry being one of the fastest in the region to recover post-Covid lockdowns. The U.S. Supreme Court has issued a ruling that limits the power of the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to impose penalties on individuals who fail to file reports disclosing foreign bank accounts. The decision overturned a $2.72 million fine imposed by the IRS on businessman Alexandru Bittner, a dual U.S.-Romanian citizen, who had argued that the maximum penalty for belatedly filing foreign bank account reports should be $50,000, pursuant to the Bank Secrecy Act.

The Bank Secrecy Act is designed to combat money laundering and tax evasion by requiring U.S. citizens and residents to file reports disclosing their foreign bank accounts. Non-willful violations of the law are subject to a maximum penalty of $10,000 per violation.

Bittner had only learned of the requirement to file the so-called FBAR reports after returning to the United States from Romania in 2011. He subsequently submitted five annual reports covering the years 2007 to 2011. The issue was whether violations are assessed based on the number of FBAR reports a taxpayer was supposed to file or the number of foreign bank accounts that they were supposed to reveal on those reports.

During a meeting of the board of the Thai Health Promotion Foundation on Sunday, Public Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul stated that the Ministry of Public Health opposes the proposal to extend pub operating hours from 2am to 4am, citing concerns for public welfare and safety.
However, he did acknowledge the Ministry may allow pubs in certain major tourist destinations to operate until 4am on a case-by-case basis to balance social and economic aspects without causing harm.

Anutin has instructed the Disease Control Department to work with the Royal Thai Police and Customs Department to enforce laws regarding e-cigarettes, and the Thai Health Promotion Foundation has been instructed to intensify efforts to educate the public, particularly young people, about the risks associated with e-cigarettes.
Despite claims that e-cigarettes are less harmful than traditional cigarettes, Anucha stated that they will never be legalized in Thailand.
