FYI - Purchased an airline ticket to Nakhon Phanom, departing Tuesday, July 7. The extremely tentative journey: flight to Nakhon Phanom, spend a day or two in the city, visiting the former home of Ho Chi Minh. The former leader of Vietnam living in the city from 1924 through 1929, in a small village known as Baan Na Chok. Then I'll head down to the boardwalk on the Mekong River, for a short cruise and meal, and also to try and find a small boat to charter to Bueng Kan.
Once in Bueng Kan, I'll visit the Wat Phu Tok, also known as the Wat Jetiyakhiri. Located 150KM east of Nong Khai, the temple is located on a 1200 foot high mountain. To get to the temple, I'll need to walk up a series of set wooden walkways and staircases spiraling around the mountain. The reward is a picturesque view of the Mekong River and Laos.
Next stop: Nong Khai. It's been years since I've visited this border town, a stopping off point for foreigners looking to head into Laos. I know of a small guest house right on the river that serves great coffee and it is here where I will decide whether to continue on along the outside edge of Thailand or head back to Bangkok.
Of course, I'll be streaming and filming all along the way. Wish me luck.
