A recent poll conducted by Time Out, the publisher of global city guides, has revealed a list of the best cities in the world for public transport. The poll surveyed 20,000 residents in 50 cities around the globe to find out their views on local mass transit systems. The top ten cities on the list were all in Asia and Europe, with Berlin topping the list as the best city for public transport. North America's highest entry was New York City at number 15, with no other continents represented in the top 19 cities.
To qualify for the list, at least 80% of residents surveyed had to agree that it was easy to get around their city using mass transportation. While aesthetics such as beautiful subway stations were considered, the main factors for inclusion were the reliability, comfort, and safety of the public transport network. Seven of the top 19 cities on the list were in Asia, with Tokyo ranked in third place, while six were in Europe, including London and Edinburgh.
These cities won praise for their unified payment systems that cover various forms of transport, including Copenhagen's water taxis and Amsterdam's seamless transfer between buses, trains, and trams. Cities with sustainable initiatives, such as incentives to reduce car traffic, were also included.
